Today I downloaded a free demo of a game called Iron Rebellion. A full early access version of the game is available on Steam alongside a demo.
This is a multiplayer, online PvP mech shooter in Virtual Reality. I played it on the Oculus Quest 2 (Meta Quest 2) but it also supports Valve Index, HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, and Windows Mixed Reality headsets.
The demo offers you the option to be behind the seat of a combat mech and fight waves of robot enemies.
The game looks amazing, featuring realistic-looking mechs with great details to the interior of the mech. The cockpit, where you’ll spend most of your time in.
You can choose between different mech classes and customize your weapons for each hand.
Mechs can jump (more like floating about the ground), reload their weapon, and shoot. Everything felt intuitive for the most part, maybe except the reloading mechanism.
Here is the gameplay from the demo of Iron Rebellion. I plan to make time to cover the full early access version at a later date.
The sound effects in this game are great, especially the ones of the mech, which really give a sense of weight and increase presence, immersion and realism.
That just shows how important sound effects are in VR games. In general, being in VR for many games enhance realism. AT least those who designed with that in mind. Textures look larger. Moving in the VR space also makes light changes more prominent. I guess that’s related to our survival instinct as well in some way.
Nonetheless, the game got some great positive early reviews. It was related on November 10, 2021, today as of the time of writing this article.
It is being developed by Black Beach Studio. If you are searching for a Team-based shooter with large mech robots and lots of cool VR action, I’m sure you’ll love it — At least give the demo a try. Enjoy!
