Is Donkey Kong 3 Really That Bad?

Hey everyone. As a gamer, I love digging into the past and playing classics I missed. I have great memories of the original Donkey Kong from the arcades and my old Game & Watch. But I recently played one game in the series I’d never touched: Donkey Kong 3.

Now, a lot of people consider DK3 to be the weakest in the series, and I get why. It’s not a platformer at all. Instead, it’s this weird vertical shooter where you play as a greenhouse keeper named Stanley. Your job is to spray bugs and push Donkey Kong up some vines with your bug repellent. It’s a totally different game.

It only has three stages that just repeat and get harder and harder. But honestly? I played the NES version on Switch Online, and I actually really enjoyed it.

I spent hours trying to beat one level. The game is really challenging. I’ll admit, I was using save states to “save scam” my way through, and even then, it was tough! But it was fun because it was so challenging. It has that “just one more try” feel.

So, is it the worst DK game? I don’t think so. It’s just different. If you like a tough-as-nails, old-school challenge, I’d actually recommend checking it out. It’s a weird, fascinating piece of Nintendo history.
